María Yzaga is a multidisciplinary Peruvian artist (Lima, 1995). She studied at the Pontifica Universidad Católica del Perú(2014–2016) and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts and Design from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (2016–2020). In 2017, she also studied jewelry at the same University. Her work has been featured in international art fairs such as PARC (Lima), arteBA (Buenos Aires), Object (Rotterdam), and UVNT (Madrid), as well as in group exhibitions in Lima, Sweden, and in 2023, she took part in In Search of the Invisible, a group show by Revolver Galería in New York.

María Yzaga’s practice is built upon forms that resonate with the body  and transform into symbols through repetition and variation. Each initial form opens the way for a dynamic visual language, becoming the starting point for a visual genealogy in constant expansion.

Her process has been linked to maieutics, understood here as a form of dialogue between body, matter, and making. Just as maieutics seeks to “give birth” to knowledge already residing within the interlocutor, Yzaga’s art seems to assist in the emergence of forms that already exist, in potential, within her internal world — forms that find their path through the act of making.

In her sculptural work, this method translates into assemblages of found, mostly domestic objects — recognizable, often playful figures that evoke the everyday but deviate from their original function to become symbolic artifacts. In contrast, her painting follows a more gestural, sensory, and abstract logic.
Painting and sculpture intertwine as two complementary voices within a single visual language — one that seeks to name the unnameable, reveal the unspoken, and build meaning through form.
